Same thing was observed in the french revolution. Kind of a hard call, but I've also read a few articles that have attributed the same thing to reflexive actions, such as responding to your name being called, instead of actually being conscious.

I think he twitched like a headless chicken a bit. That woman will be haunted by this horrifying image for the rest of her life. She hears a clang of whipped steel, turns around, and there's something on the floor. Her brain: "What is that? OMFG, it's his head! Arrrrrrrggggh!"
