Actually, when you get hit in the head with a hammer, you can't do much other than be shocked at how much it hurts and why your vision is suddenly all blurry. Lets just say I've taken a hard impact to the head before in a vehicle accident. Not with a hammer as such, but yeah. All the people saying "I'd do X, Y and Z and defend myself!" clearly haven't suffered a significant head injury before.
