He probably had faint hope people below had surrounded the building with mattresses, or were holding a blanket to run under and catch him, or at least some shrubbery to break his fall, or even one burly firefighter holding his arms open. I'd drink all I could from the mini bar to convince myself I'd have no more than a very cool story to tell the kiddies.
