Re: Man Falls to His Death Fleeing Fire
No. If they were bundled, it would take a while for them to fail. He only needed 15 seconds to get down to the next window. A better example of this is a barn fire in the midwest. I lived there, and firemen told me that they would fight a fire in a barn with wooden beams, longer than they would fight a fire in a barn with steel beams, because wooden beams char from the outside in, and it takes a LONG time for them to fail. Whereas, if they sprayed water on steel beams, they would shrink and twist, andyou never knew when the barn structure was going to fall. He could have dipped them in water, if there was a bathroom near enough. Or a fish tank, or some soda on a counter. ANY LIQUID to soak the fabric before knotting it up. Only the very top 3 feet even need to be wet. Tie the rope off to a piece of furniture, throw the rope out the window, and slide down as quickly as you can. The furniture jammed against the wall or the window will hold the rope, and the exterior of the furniture will also shield the rope from the flames, at least for a little while. Like many others on here, if I lived in a highrise building, I would have a way of escape by the window, perhaps with 10 feet of steel chain secured inside the apartment, and then the rope or ladder attached down the chain a ways. This is something you have to think about and prepare for BEFORE there is a fire. |
