The most common reason they survive this particular type of injury is because of body-twist; the legs and pelvis are twisted through 360 degrees, which effectively twists the vena cava and descending aorta around each other, reducing blood loss.

It's like they expected the poor guy to get on the stretcher himself! They did have clean clothes on, so I suppose they didn't want blood on them??
