A 25-year-old man, Augustine Amuzu, originally from Benin, had come to Ghana for work, and was employed for a company distributing sachet water around the Ghana-Togo border.

However, an argument between Augustine and his boss commenced. Some sources stated that the argument was over a salary dispute. Other sources stated that Augustine collected over 11,000 Central African francs ($19.45) from a debtor to give to his boss, but he took some of the money for himself.

In any case, Augustine struck his boss in the head with a club, knocking him unconscious, before he beheaded him. Augustine got on the motorized tricycle he used for deliveries, and dumped the head in a lagoon. However, local citizens caught him in the act, and the head was retrieved. Augustine was arrested.
