Man, Accused of Assault, Shot Dead by Police After Putting Hands Up
El Hatico, La Vega, Dominican Republic A 35-year-old man, Marqui A.G.G., was shot dead by National Police agents, with his family accusing officers of carrying out an extrajudicial execution. Marqui had been accused of carrying out various assaults and robberies in the area. CCTV footage showed Marqui, being chased by police, running into a yard, where he seemingly throws something over the fence before putting his hands up. An officer then shoots him. A woman entered the yard, but as she tried to enter the neighbouring property, an officer tried to seize her. The woman ultimately fled as the officer went back to the yard to collect something. Meanwhile, Marqui's body was dragged out by other officers. Relatives claimed that officers had removed several pieces of evidence from the scene. Police claimed that the death occurred during a supposed armed confrontation. After the CCTV footage spread online, the police have promised an investigation into the circumstances. |
