Protesters gathered in Madison, Wisconsin, yesterday evening and through the night after a police officer fatally shot a man during an attempted arrest, an incident captured on graphic video.

The state’s Division of Criminal Investigation has opened an independent investigation of the incident. Authorities cautioned that the full circumstances of the shooting were still being determined.

A Madison Police Department officer shot the man while trying to arrest him, according to authorities. The man, Corey Ruiz, a 38-year-old homeless resident, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The man pulled out a knife during a struggle with officers, injuring one of them, Police Chief John Patterson said in a news conference. The officer who was hurt was the one who shot the man, according to the police department.

Patterson did not identify the officer who fired the shots, describing him only as a veteran officer.

On Thursday morning, about two dozen people chatted and hugged each other at the site of the shooting. A makeshift shrine was marked “sacred ground” in chalk and included flowers and signs that said “Stop the murders” and “Black lives matter.” Fliers on nearby posts said, “Jail killer cops now.” A stereo played a stream of songs, including Sonic Youth’s “Youth Against Fascism” and James Brown’s “Say It Loud — I’m Black and I’m Proud.”

Thirty or so people peacefully honored the victim through the night, said James Webster, one of those who stayed overnight into Thursday morning.

“I have my two daughters, and I want them to grow up in a world [where] our first instinct isn’t shooting somebody — killing somebody, at that — for simply resisting arrest,” he said. “That’s something cops see every day and are trained to handle, especially when it’s one man against four officers.”

Webster said he wants the officer who fired the shots to be charged and believes the police should be better trained and equipped with body cameras.

Common Council President Sabrina Madison postponed a planned listening session due to an expected vigil Thursday evening.

Update:The shooting unfolded Wednesday afternoon when police officers were dispatched to Madison’s Marquette neighborhood after reports of someone stealing bicycles and checking vehicle doors, police said in their initial statement.

​Officers located Ruiz, but he biked off, traveling through backyards to get away, authorities said. Police found him shortly afterward at the intersection of South Baldwin and Williamson streets, police said.

Ruiz either fell or was pulled off the bicycle, police said, and then a struggle with officers ensued in the intersection. During the struggle, Ruiz pulled out a fixed-blade knife and injured an officer, police said.​

However, when you are being placed under arrest for something, why would you fight it!?! Four officers are trying to subdue you, then you pull out a knife and cut one of them what do you expect?! Guy was a general dirtbag based on his criminal record, but there has been no mention I can find of why they were detaining him in the middle of the street. I'd be curious to know what the actual charge was that led to them calling for backup and giving him a center ring 4-1 smackdown.

In any case, four pigs (with more backup arriving in the video) tasing and then pushing a homeless dude prone on the ground with two of the swine pinning his legs before the fattest porker of them all executes him with three shots at point blank range isn't a good look. Especially in Madison, a city whose police force has somehow become more infamous than Daryl Gates' thugs in LA.

Fatty Baconbits was 'treated' and released in less than 30 minutes from the hospital, so I doubt the 'knife' even made a nick in the 300 pounds of suet he's hauling. Don't these lardasses get fitness exams anymore?

If the videos showed the homeless dipshit charging him with a knife, I might even agree that it was a justified shooting. But three shots from two feet away when the guy is flat on the ground with his legs pinned? Nah. That's an execution. ACAB, fuckers.

Thugs who have no regard for the law, who refuse to play by any set of civilised rules have no right to demand that others adhere to the civilised rules they themselves flaunt with impunity ; especially when they have chosen to arm themselves with a lethal weapon and have shown a willingness to use it. What did he THINK would happen? That there was any possible outcome to this that involved them letting him up and go? He was being detained because he matched the called-in description of a person checking for unlocked doors on cars- a predicate to theft that is going to get you detained and questioned every time. Try it yourself if you don’t believe me.

The incoming backup was because he immediately resisted and started scuffling with the cops. When they call for backup, any cops in the area who aren’t already engaged with something worse start heading that way. Slow day = big response.

Then, when he saw he was losing the battle to resist arrest, he pulled a knife and cut and/or stabbed one of the cops- a deadly threat that will get you shot every time. Try it yourself if you don’t believe me.

Who knows, if you’ve the right skin color, CNN and ANTIFA will pick up the story, and you’ll catch vigils and various NPCs taking up for you on the internet.
