You'd be surprised at how many parents are fucking idiots even when around something as dangerous as water. I used to be a lifeguard and had four saves in one summer. The one I remember most was this little kid -- maybe 4 or 5 -- goes up on the diving board. Some kids are really good swimmers, but I always watched them to make sure. Kid jumps off the end and sinks like a rock. I got him up fine and got him to safety, but not only were his parents at the opposite end of the public pool not watching him, but his brother had a similar episode and drowned a couple years prior. Fucking idiots.

it amazes me how many people are there after the fact but apparently not one person there at the time the child was drowning that could swim and rescue him?
