The problem is that once that Bomb Disarming Unit (if you can call it that) saw the news cameras, it became a reality show for them, and they probably started performing instead of using technical skill and caution. Surprised the guy opening the letter bomb didn't stand up, raise his arms, roll up his sleeves, address the cameras and say "I shall now defuse the bomb! Watch and marvel!"
