I suppose it could have been his own device that exploded on his left side.

He must have been squat to set the explosives and then *BOOM* it goes off way too early. The bomb ripped through his leg, which was nearest to the bomb . It also got his hand that was near the explosives. So those two bodyparts protected the rest of him, which still seemed intact.

Notice that the tops of his thighs are without burnmarks and some of his right side too. The left side on the other hand has bloodstains. These things suggest that he was squat when the bomb blew up.

And you only go squat near a bomb for one reason.
