At Least 40 Killed by Allied Democratic Forces Militants in Congo
Congo. A wave of brutal attacks by Allied Democratic Forces militants has left at least 40 civilians dead in the volatile North Kivu and Ituri provinces. The latest violence targeted the town of Biakato in the Mambasa territory of Ituri, where at least 12 people were killed on Thursday. This assault followed a separate massacre less than 48 hours earlier in the Beni territory of North Kivu, which claimed approximately 20 lives. Local officials report that the attackers used a combination of gunfire and machetes, burning homes and looting property as they swept through isolated farming hamlets. Hundreds of residents have fled the area, adding to a humanitarian crisis that has displaced over 7 million people in the region. The ADF is originally a Ugandan rebel group formed in the 1990's. The ADF pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2019 and is now recognized as IS Central Africa State (ISCAP). Despite the joint Operation Shujaa launched by the Congolese (FARDC) and Ugandan (UPDF) militaries in 2021, the ADF continues to operate with terrifying impunity in the dense forests of the border regions. A recent report by Amnesty International accuses the group of systematic war crimes and crimes against humanity. |
