At Least 12 People Killed After a Protest March Turned Violent
At least 12 people were killed, many others injured and several activists arrested after a protest march in the diamond-rich Lunda-Norte province of Angola turned violent yesterday. According to local media reports, the protest did not have police approval. Gunshots were heard immediately after the police and army arrived at the site where the protesters assembled. The protest march was organised by tribal activists of the Lunda Chokwe Protectorate Movement, whose main complaint revolves around human rights and the widespread poverty in a rich province. Similar protests in the past also ended in violence. |
