At Least 11 Dead After Clash Between Dissident Factions
An armed confrontation between dissident groups, near the border of Putumayo and Caquetá Departments, Colombia, resulted in at least eleven dead. This violent episode took place in the hamlet of José María, where two dissident factions of the FARC clashed over the weekend. The factions involved were the so-called Raúl Reyes, led by alias Calarcá, and the Border Commands, under the command of Walter Mendoza. The number of dead from the battle has yet to be determined, although it has been confirmed that 11 bodies were found: eight in Solita (Caquetá), and three in Puerto Guzmán (Putumayo). There have been clashes between dissident factions in the region, especially over control on coca crops and routes. The region where the clash occurred is near Colombia's border with Ecuador. |
