I have to wonder if this shooting would be justified if a regular citizen with a firearm shot someone armed with a pole for taking one step toward them. If yes, then OK. If not, the cop should be treated exactly the same. The problem I see is most citizens would be prosecuted for doing exactly what the cop did. Their life is no more important than any other person's life.

If he didn't want to run the risk of getting shot, he shouldnt have been carrying a metal pipe. No pipe = no problem.

Clear case of boneheadedness leading to death. Approach a law enforcement officer with a potentially deadly weapon in a threatening manner and deadly force meets deadlier force. You could see the guy talking his last few agonal breaths near the end from quite a distance away.

I'll tell you the problem: train the cops in karate and judo. Cops want to shoot first to diffuse any high stress situation. Teach discipline and inner strength mixed with focused coordination. Why not?
