I believe you are mistaken. The man sobbing is Don Matecun, one of Kyle's friends. See section 12 of the court ruling here. I quote: "Deputy Don Matecun, a friend of the victim, was the first law enforcement officer to arrive at the murder scene.   In the guilt-innocence phase, he testified about finding the victim lying in the road with a female passerby trying to help him."

According to this piece, Kyle's father was an HVAC technician who found out about Kyle's death at the hospital.
