Looks like the citizens caught a foreign "freedom fighter" who had been terrorizing the country and got some sweet revenge.

Agreed, I don't care what they think he did, or his motives. You patch him up, let him recover and then put him on trial for his actions. Then if found guilty, you can kill him using a traditional form of capital punishment. That may not be perfect, but it is better than this. This is  !
