Re: Killed on the Autobahn
I completed a high speed escape and evasion driver training course in 2000/01 and the last week was all about training the mind to process driving at faster and faster speeds. The mind processes this type of info in clusters, say 0>50mph, 50>90, 90>130, 130>180 and so on. Some highspeed drivers, F1, F2 and most other circuit drivers process the incoming data at a phenominal rate, they apparently process the data at 150>170mph whilst racing easier than most drivers can at 25>35mph in a residential area! But, if you think that is fast...a top end rally driver can process and react to conditions/incidents up to 4 times quicker than your tarmac circuit driver, and the rally navigator often shows higher reaction speeds than his driver! Personally, I was very comfortable and passed at 130mph on my first outing. This was no surprise as that was the high end cruise speed of my own car and drove that speed fairly regularly. But was very unsettled in the 135>155mph as it was just above the high end comfort zone in my own car....but I had no concerns in the 150>175mph zone (the cars where all restricted to 172>175mph as it was deemed any chasers at that speed would either crash out or we would!! And take it from me anything above 130>140mph on a public highway is bloody nerve wracking! On a footnote....just when you think your Billy Big Balls driving at150mph on a public highway there is no bigger ego deflater than the sight of a set of daytime driving lights getting larger in your rear view and then flashing you to get out of his way andwatching the huge bright yellow whale tail spoiler of a massively over powered Porsche power away to well over 200mph, making you feel like the old codger driving at 40>50mph in the outside lane on the motorway/freeway, personally I reckoned it was one of the other course instructors putting the newly qualified and smug drivers in their place! BTW...over there if someone coming up behind you at speed flashes you, he is saying stay the fuck where you are as Im coming through. As opposed to the Im letting you out scenario of the US and UK. |
