No reason was offered by the sheriff during the arraignment. The sad truth is that killing the judge really isn't doing anything to "protect" his family. It was an act of vengence for something not yet disclosed.
The real damage to the family is going to happen during the civil trial, where a dollar value is going to be established in the judgement which is going to financially decimate his wife. The assets will be attached, his daughter can forget about going to college. He has essentially ruined their lives. If anyone should be trusting the justice system (if a crime really happened) it should be someone in law enforcement.

Alternate explanation I've heard: Judge and Sheriff and their families are close friends. Sheriff is a violent abusive husband and father to said girl. Wife left him recently and took the daughter out of fear of their own safety. Judge has secretly been helping wife and daughter without telling Sheriff. Sheriff finds out, feels betrayed, blames Judge for his wife and daughter leaving, shoots judge. Pedophilia allegations totally baseless.
