Jan Davis Fatal BASE Jump
A 60-year-old woman died after her parachute failed to open during a protest jump off Yosemite National Park's famed El Capitan peak on Friday, park officials said. Jan Davis, of Santa Barbara, was among five jumpers who took part in the demonstration against the park's ban on BASE jumping, a sport that involves leaping from fixed objects with a parachute. Davis borrowed gear for the jump to avoid having her own equipment confiscated by rangers, according to her husband, Tom Sanders, who was among the spectators. Witnesses said Davis was the fourth jumper and fell to the base of the 3,200-foot granite monolith after failing to deploy her parachute. The other jumpers landed safely. BASE jumping is banned in national parks, and rangers have arrested and fined participants in the past. The protest followed the June 9 death of Frank Gambalie III, who drowned while fleeing rangers after a successful jump. Organizers said the demonstration aimed to show that BASE jumps can be done safely and to honor Gambalie. |

Re: Jan Davis Fatal BASE Jump
Definitely. Although it's not graphic there's something haunting about the way it unfolds. I can't help but imagine what was in her head for those few seconds when she couldn't find the cord and started to panic.

"Davis was jumping with borrowed gear because she did not want her own to be confiscated" She was as incompetent as Amelia Earhart, yay Women Power, lets protest something incompetently with borrowed equipment we never plan to return... People like her are why I quit lending tools... |

That's why I only lend out my junk parachute that doesn't work. I won't lend out my good one.

Re: Jan Davis Fatal BASE Jump
Sounds like she let emotion get the best of her after having her gear confiscated and didn't think things through properly.

Re: Jan Davis Fatal BASE Jump
Sorry but it's hard to feel sorry for someone who does this and DOESNT KNOW WHERE THE RIP CORD IS! I mean it's the only thing you absolutely have to know. Un-fucking-believable.

Re: Jan Davis Fatal BASE Jump
Well as I said she probably had a lot of powerful hormones pumping and her thought process was impaired as a result. It would have been super if someone who was thinking clearly had taken control at that point and either made sure she knew the setup of her new rig or got her not to jump. But yes really stupid. |
