A few years ago I was in the Netherlands, and I saw a guy looking at me odd outside the train station. He came up to me and with an expressionless face said slowly in a Polish / Russian accent "You fuckin say?" I looked at him, alarm bells going off like mad inside me. I thought oh fuck, here we go... He repeated it. I thought I'm going to have to chin this fucker before he decks me. He wasn't in my face, and his body language wasn't matching what he was saying. Then the third time he pointed at me and said "You." then he turned and pointed in a direction and said "Fuckin say" Then he looked back at me and smiled. Then I realized he was trying to say or ask "You Wijk Aan Zee?" That was the name of a village near where I lived, where most of the Polish agency workers stayed, and some Brits also. He was trying to ask me how to get there, which bus he should be on. I burst out laughing, and happily told him how to get there. What a fucking relief that was. And when I helped him he said "me long time" and pointed at the ground. I guess he meant he'd been there for ages and nobody was helping him. I told him how to say Wijk Aan Zee properly, for the next time he needed to ask someone. So yeah that shit happens irl, simple misunderstanding and everything can go to shit quickly. Not so with this Tunisian man I think. He probably got what he deserved, but... you never know  |
