Italian Tourist Killed With One Punch
Police say that Oliver D’Orio, 37, was punched in the face around 12:10 a.m. yesterday in front of Guerrero Bodega on Washington Avenue and East 184th Street. He hit his head on the sidewalk and immediately lost consciousness; he was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Witnesses say that D'Orio was asking customers, including the suspect, at the bodega for alcohol when the incident happened. D'Orio was pestering the suspect, saying, 'Buy me a beer, buy me a beer,' bodega clerk Julio Minier said. They came out onto the street and when the fight started he punched him with an open hand. The man accused of throwing the punch that ended a tourist's life has been released on bail after being charged with harassment and assault. Bail for Brownie Lopez, 19, who appeared in a Bronx courtroom Monday, was set at $5,000 cash or $2,500 bond. Lopez turned himself in to police at the 48th Precinct recently, wiping tears from his eyes as he was escorted in by officers. |

I'm sure it wasn't the punch that killed him but the impact of his head on the concrete.

If the story actually went the way they say it did, then I'd say it was self defence and he rightfully was not charged with murder. The guy clearly did take his shirt off and was about to engage the afro dude in a fight. Too bad he died though. Definitely didn't deserve to die just because he had too much to drink and started being a bit stupid.

He did not look to be charging at the guy at all. He walked up slowly then just stood there

Exactly what I was going to say. "Charged"? There was no charging involved here, and nothing that would justify sucker punching someone. He'll be rightfully convicted of manslaughter. |
