A 35-year-old builder, Andrea R., was killed when, after running onto the tarmac of Bergamo Airport, he was sucked into a jet engine, killing him at the scene. According to police sources, Andrea had a history of drug problems, and it is thought his actions were deliberate and premeditated.

Andrea arrived at the airport without a ticket, and is said to have got past security and opened a door in the arrivals area that led directly to the aircraft parking area.

The plane was about to travel to Asturias, Spain, when Andrea ended his life. Passengers reported feeling a 'powerful vibration'. One flyer noted:
