Im guessing that the guy who ran behind the pillar is the one who died he took some major blows to the neck and im sure i seen arterial spray as he backed off....the attacker had some BIG balls attacking two guys with riffles but he very nearly pulled it off

Don't get me wrong, I'm not justifying it, but it's used to try and deter attackers who care little about their own fate, and it is possibly effective to some extent.

In the same way North Korea punishes the families of people who escape the country and defect.

How are you equating "detained" as "punishment"? It's probably normal procedure (there) to question immediate relatives of a terrorist suspect.

The IDF probably has to take them in for questioning rather than do it out in the open. It's probably safer for the relatives that way.

They definitely need to question the family members to conduct the investigation, but detaining them implies they are being held beyond questioning as though they are likely to receive charges. Being held in any jail is definitely a punishment. It’s just a backwards approach at the cost of probably innocent family members. Normally they would discover a connection between the family member and the crime and then go arrest him. Here they’re arresting family members on assumption that they’re gonna find a connection and it’s not likely all of them if any of them will be linked to the attack. They are administering group justice onto the attacker’s family surely to put that fear into potential future terrorists.
