We wouldn't let an animal suffer in that way. Imagine the pain! The humane thing to do is give him/her an overdose of morphine. No pain, just slip quietly away. You'd be breaking the law of course. The Human Rights Brigade would be on the case like a pack of jackals, and you'd probably spend time in jail. You'd lose your reputation, and your job, and be the proud owner of a criminal record. Crazy world.
