The Company Raj and British Raj was solely about exploiting the massive natural wealth and resources of the Indian subcontinent for the gain of British colonial elites. There were repeated, massive famines killing millions and whilst famine was not new to India, the scale of them was. Even more died due to epidemics brought about by shit, crowded conditions in massive slums coupled with lack of food. Taxes took money out of India back to the British. No free elections or universal suffrage yet millions were conscripted to die. In the case of rebellion (who can blame them?) whole villages and families could be massacred for the crime of being related to an alleged perp.
Is the system now perfect? No fucking way, but it's a damn sight better for most than anything during the colonial period. There are still slums, still a lot of poverty, but living standards, life expectancy, infant mortality, years spent in ill health, people under the poverty line, access to healthcare and education, literacy rates etc etc are far better and most importantly IMO they're governing themselves, not beholden to some cunt 3000 miles away.
We built them railroads, ungrateful bastids.
