My father almost ran over an old woman in his truck. He was waiting at some lights and just as he was about to drive on, he saw a tiny red feather sticking up in front of his windscreen. When he leaned forward, it was an old woman with a hat on who was walking across the road about 6 inches from his front bumper. If she hadn't been wearing the hat, she'd be dead, or at least very flat.

My guess is that in an effort to cut back in world population they stopped teaching kids the look-both-ways rule and are letting the problem work itself out
