heart attack = blood flow stops due to blockage

Cardiac arrest = heart function stops completely

Both are serious but cardiac arrest ALWAYS results in sudden and immediate unconsciousness because you stop breathing and heart doesn't pump. Cardiac arrest you need to have your heart restarted asap

Re: India - Guy Suffers Heart Attack

I meant to add that heart attacks though serious you might still be able to walk, talk, as usual but obviously you need immediate medical assistance

I appreciate the clarification. I thought it was the same thing.

Re: India - Guy Suffers Heart Attack

Cardiac arrest simply means the heart stopped. It doesn’t say anything about what caused it to stop

The actual cause of death in this case would have to be determined by autopsy

Re: India - Guy Suffers Heart Attack

No no no; gentlemen, please. He 100% died from an arrhythmia. Based on the way he was moving... Likely, he had a heart attack first, which lead to extreme discomfort/pain, which then lead to a cardiac arrhythmia called sudden cardiac death (SCD), aka cardiac arrest. At that point, perfusion to the brain reached a point where he couldn't maintain consciousness, and fell. So technically he died from an arrhythmia. Assuming he didn't instantly die from the impact of hitting the ground(extremely unlikely), he would have had a great chance to survive if someone saw it happen, immediately performed high quality CPR, and then quickly got him to a hospital with a cath lab.

I'm actually brilliant. What's the difference [between cardiac arrest and heart attack]?
They're technically not the same thing. Cardiac arrest means the heart is unable to efficiently pump blood due to an electrical rhythm dysfunction in the heart. Myocardial infarction, aka a heart attack, is when the heart tissues doesn't get enough oxygen and malfunctions. If not reperfused within 4 or 5 hours, the cardiac tissue will die, and depending on how much of that heart tissue dies, the person may die too. Your title is technically correct. First, the man suffered from a heart attack(myocardial infarction), which then led to cardiac arrest(sudden cardiac death). If he had the cardiac arrest first, he would have died in that chair, or within 6 inches of it. Since he had enough time to move toward the door, it means he felt the discomfort/pain and knew something was wrong=myocardial infarction.

heart attack = blood flow stops due to blockage

Cardiac arrest = heart function stops completely

Both are serious but cardiac arrest ALWAYS results in sudden and immediate unconsciousness because you stop breathing and heart doesn't pump. Cardiac arrest you need to have your heart restarted asap
not quite

Heart attack = A mismatch between cardiac oxygen demand, and cardiac oxygen supply. Essentially, it's cardiac tissue which isn't getting enough oxygen, likely, but not always due to a blockage in a coronary artery. You can also have plaque that diminishes, but not completely obstructs the flow of blood in a coronary artery which can lead to a heart attack. You could also have an aneurism burst in a coronary artery or a spontaneous coronary artery dissection which leads to an MI. So it's not always a blockage.

Cardiac arrest = Heart stops pumping blood to the body due to an arrhythmia. Don't get it twisted. The heart function does not completely stop, nor do you stop breathing nor is there instantaneous loss of consciousness (it takes a second or two, maybe 3 or 4.. but usually less than 2 unless you're super athletic). With cardiac arrest, the heart's function is very inefficient. Your heart tissue is definitely still moving around, and functioning. The heart muscles are just moving around in an uncoordinated fashion due to an abnormal electrical rhythm, and that results in an inability to pump blood properly. As such, the heart stops being able to efficiently pump blood to the body, usually to the point where no blood is being pumped to the body due to the abnormal electrical rhythm aka arrhythmia = sudden cardiac death

With cardiac arrest, you can still breathe just fine At least, until the brainstem fails to send signals to the diaphragm, due to lack of perfusion. You got some stuff correct though; I'd give you a C-
