Ian Flanders Base Wingsuit Pilot Dies Filming Docu About Wingsuit Deaths
Background story http://www.people.com/article/ian-fl...se-jumper-dies What are your thoughts on this guys? If you've ever done jumps, always the moment of biggest relief is when your parachute unfolds properly and you are coasting comfortably to the ground. I always take a glance up at the chute for that reassurance lol. I'm hoping to get to 300 jumps and begin wingsuit training. But one thing I would never do is proximity flights. To me, it's like playing the Russian roulette. And I see no point.. after all, if I crash and die, I won't be able to enjoy future jumps. It's better to enjoy a safe jump than to risk it all in a daring one. |

If people enjoy taking those risks and understand death is possible, I say they should go for it if they want to. I just don't like when they take a pet with them. I find it hard to believe any animal wants to fall from hundreds or thousands of feet in the sky.

Re: Ian Flanders Base Wingsuit Pilot Dies Filming Docu About Wingsuit Deaths
It's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the end. S P L A T ! ! ! ! ! While one can do things to minimize the chance of something going wrong, if you do it often enough eventually the odds will catch up to you. Back in the late 1980s a newspaperman visiting the Raiders football training camp in California had just returned from the Jack London Historic Monument. He read a sample of London’s prose to the Raiders’ colorful quarterback, Ken “The Snake” Stabler: “I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by rot! I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of a man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” The newspaperman asked the quarterback, “What does this mean to you?” “Throw deep,” said Stabler! |

Thanks for chiming in guys. On a related note, I'd be curious to find out if there's any video of the documentary that Ian was working on? Even if it is a work in progress etc. I hope they get to finish that docu. Would definitely be an interesting watch. |

Was the camera man making a whistling noise like a bomb falling out of the sky right before he hit? lol

Since Stabler was a quarterback, wouldn't "throw deep" imply that he's trying to avoid getting hit as much as possible? And wouldn't that be the opposite of the poem's message? Or does "throw deep" imply that he'll be waiting in the pocket longer for the receivers to get down-field, thereby risking himself in the process? |
