Video Suspect`s Father: Victim Was A Good Mother

``She was a good mother.``

That is how Emilio Nunez Sr. described his former daughter-in-law, whose slaying at her daughter`s grave was captured on videotape.

Maritza Martin was shot to death by Emilio Nunez Jr. on Jan 18. The younger Nunez was giving an interview to a TV reporter when Martin showed up at the North Lauderdale cemetery.

Nunez Sr. described his son as violent and disturbed and said he had repeatedly threatened to kill Martin long before making good on the threats.

Nunez Jr., who fired a dozen bullets at his ex-wife, was arrested on Jan. 20 in Fort Stockton, Texas, and charged with first-degree murder. He is being held without bail in the Midland County Detention Center. An extradition hearing is scheduled for Feb. 23.

Relatives say Nunez Jr. blamed Martin for the suicide of their daughter Yoandra, 15, and had orally threatened Martin`s life.

After Yoandra Nunez killed herself, Nunez Jr. started to follow Martin. He also threatened his father and went to Yoandra`s school, Northeast High in Oakland Park, with a gun, saying he would take revenge on everybody.

In an interview with the Spanish- and English-language weekly Exito, Nunez Sr. said his son had suffered emotional problems since early childhood and had visited a psychiatrist for the first time as an elementary school student in Havana, Cuba. The younger Nunez had problems in school: He flunked fourth grade three times.

Nunez Jr. met the former Maritza Munoz when they were teen-agers and, by age 16, had become obsessed with her, Nunez Sr. said. The two married despite Nunez Sr.`s efforts to persuade his son to wait.

After Yoandra`s birth, Nunez Jr. decided to flee Cuba. He confided in friends, but someone betrayed him, and he spent three years in a Cuban jail.

Nunez Sr. said his son was devastated by the separation from his wife, and he underwent psychiatric treatment and electroshock therapy.

During the Mariel boatlift in 1980, Nunez Sr. left for the United States after Nunez Jr. assured him that he, too, would get a chance to leave.

But Nunez Jr. did not get that chance and began to say his father had abandoned him, Nunez Sr. said.

Meanwhile, Martin divorced Nunez Jr., went to Miami and worked to earn enough to bring her mother and Yoandra to the United States.

By the time Emilio Nunez Jr. had arrived in Miami, both he and Martin had married other people.

``Nevertheless, Maritza always tried to get the daughter and father closer together,`` the elder Nunez said. ``She was a good mother.``
