Re: Hong Kong Blue Van Hitting A Fire Truck Stopping For An Earlier Accident
News 13th March 2025 – (Hong Kong) GoGoVan has expressed deep regret following a fatal accident on West Kowloon Highway this afternoon, in which a van driver working on a job through the platform tragically lost his life. The company has pledged to assist the driver’s family and is actively coordinating with its insurance provider to address the situation. The accident occurred at approximately 1.48pm when a heavy truck travelling toward Kowloon lost control and struck roadside barriers near the Yau Ma Tei slip road. While firefighters were attending to the scene, a light goods vehicle, identified as a GoGoVan, collided with the rear of a stationary firetruck in the direction of the New Territories. The van’s 44-year-old driver, surnamed Cheung, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Kwong Wah Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3.20pm. GoGoX confirmed that the driver was handling an order from Jardine’s Lookout to Kam Tin at the time of the accident, which fell within the coverage of the company’s complimentary group accident insurance. The platform is working closely with the insurance provider to ensure all necessary follow-ups are handled. In a statement, GoGoX extended its condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of the deceased. The platform has immediately identified the driver’s details through its internal system, contacted his family, and visited the hospital to provide support and financial assistance.” The company reiterated its commitment to driver safety, noting that its group accident insurance, introduced in October 2023, offers coverage of up to HK$300,000 for accidental death or disability. This insurance automatically applies to drivers aged 18 to 70 enrolled in the GoGoX decal programme while they are fulfilling platform orders. Footage from the scene shows significant damage to the van’s front end after it struck the firetruck’s rear left side. Debris from the earlier accident involving the heavy truck was scattered across the Kowloon-bound lanes, while firefighters worked to clear the area and manage traffic. The collision also prompted emergency crews to dispatch an additional six fire engines and two ambulances to aid in the rescue effort. The Fire Services Department confirmed that no firefighters were injured in the incident. The West Kowloon Traffic Unit is investigating the cause of the crash and has appealed to anyone who witnessed the accident or has relevant information to contact investigators at 3661 9188. |
