I would have just took off running. Some comments here recommend closing the distance and what not. Umm, are we forgetting that this individual is a homeless and mentally impaired. I absolutely would *not* be getting in any close proximity to him if at all possible. Many of the unfortunate homeless I see smell horrible and are often covered in their own filth (including urine, vomit, blood, and fecal matter).
