Re: His Last Bus Ride
No -- Actually, he was hit on the back of his head, by the truck. He never saw the truck coming from behind. A similar thing happened to a lovely younger girl I knew in high school. She didn't come back to school after the summer holiday and the school yearbook was dedicated to her that year. I was told that she and a friend were traveling on the train (LIRR) going to the beach for the weekend. They were fooling around or having fun waving to each other from either end of the passenger car, their heads sticking out the half-doors on the ends. I imagine she was in the forward part of the car looking back and waving at her friend, who was in the rear of the train car, when she got clobbered from behind by a switching signal or telephone pole or some other unyielding object. At that time (in the early 1970s) the train doors were split in half horizontally and the bottom half would be closed to protect people from falling, but it was common for the top half to be left open. The half-doors were used by conductors who would stick their heads out at station stops to check for "all clear" on the platform and signal for the train to pull out of the station. Nowadys, they don't make the doors this way anymore -- instead, conductors (on NYC subways and LIRR) stick their heads out windows to check for the "all clear" on platforms! Ofc, the train is at a standstill when they do this. |
