B.C.’s anti-gang task force is working to head-off possible retaliation after a high-profile former B.C. gangster was shot to death near his beachside villa in Phuket, Thailand.

Sgt. Brenda Winpenny of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit said Saturday that the slaying of UN gangster J. (Slice) S. in Thailand could reverberate in B.C.

“CFSEU-B.C. will be utilizing all resources, sharing intelligence and developing strategies with our policing partners to mitigate any potential retribution or violence associated to his death,” she said.

Despite S. getting deported from Canada in 2016 for “serious criminality,” the Indian-born gangster continued to have influence in B.C.

Police on the popular tourist island said they were looking for two people captured on surveillance video at about 10:30 p.m. on Friday local time firing at S. after he pulled into the parking lot of the Beachside Hotel.

His body wasn’t discovered until 6:30 the next morning. He was carrying identification in two other names, including a Canadian passport. S. had arrived on Jan. 27 and was staying at the villa wing of the hotel.

A staff member at the hotel told that the shooting victim “owned” a villa there and was therefore not registered through the hotel’s booking system.

Police were combing the grounds of the luxury compound on Saturday to gather evidence in the case.

S. wasn’t the first B.C. gangster to be murdered abroad. Others have been killed in Argentina and Mexico. It’s hard to escape the violence associated with gang life, even for those who leave Canada.

Several gang members either flee the country to escape threats of violence or, in some cases, deported. A continued, long-entrenched gang lifestyle follows you wherever you go, and eventually, your enemies will find you, or you will be arrested and held accountable for your actions, police told.

The UN, the Brothers Keepers and the Red Scorpion/Kang group are among the B.C. gangs locked in a violent war that has led to dozens of murders in recent years. Some BK gangsters celebrated S’s murder in social-media posts when the news broke here Friday afternoon.

S. had moved to Canada as a seven-year-old and grew up with relatives in Abbotsford. After getting caught-up in the gang life and convicted of serious assaults in 2010 and 2012, he faced deportation. At his 2015 immigration hearing, he pleaded for another chance to stay in Canada and said he had changed his ways.

“I would just like one chance, one opportunity to prove myself to you,” he said at the time. “I won’t let you down.”

But the board official was unconvinced and ordered him out of the country. He left in early 2016.

Then, in June 2018, he was arrested in India and charged with operating a large ketamine factory. After he was released on bail, he disappeared and is believed to have been travelling between Dubai and Southeast Asia ever since.

In B.C., S. was also charged with killing Red Scorpion gang leader Matt Campbell in Abbotsford in January 2014, but the charge was stayed a year later.

Known as Slice for the big scar on his right cheek, S. was close to UN member Karman Grewal , who was gunned down outside Vancouver airport last Mother’s Day. No one has yet been charged in his death.

S. was once closely associated to Jujhar Khun-Khun , who pleaded guilty in 2018 to conspiracy to kill Red Scorpion Jonathan Bacon in 2011. And S. was close to Sukh Dhak, who was behind the Bacon murder and shot to death in November 2012.

Another close associate of S was robbed of an expensive chain in Dubai in recent days. The person who took the jewelry then posted a video on social media.

Abbotsford police were so concerned about S’s gang involvement that they took the extraordinary step in 2015 of warning the public to steer clear of him or risk getting caught in the crossfire. The same year at his immigration hearing, S. acknowledged the risk of gang life:

“I know that path is either go to jail or you die.”
