You don't need a tourniquet in that case. For limb loss you can roll a shirt, towel, or sheet really tightly. You can then press it onto the open wound. If you have enough material you could make a body wrap to hold the rolled shirt/towel in place after some time applying direct pressure. The goal, of course, is to slow the blood flow enough that coagulation has time to do its work. There are other mechanical things that the body does to control blood loss (i.e. arterial retraction; the body's ability to pull arteries in to seal them.). Either way, a tourniquet is not necessary, just strong direct pressure. A tourniquet would work best where there's a lot of bone protruding and the surface area is too great to cover with compression. |
