On Nov 18th a man, 60, jumped from the Hyatt Regency Building in Banqiao and died after being sent to the hospital. Some netizens found the Facebook page of the person who is suspected to have fallen from the building. Before his death, he had petitioned the New Taipei City Government many times that the entire building was filled with dust due to construction, and requested that construction be stopped before protective measures were taken, but to no avail. He posted several posts before his death, saying that the Star Point in the Hyatt Building was closed and the decoration was being removed, but no protective measures were taken, causing dust to spread all over the building. Some residents reported that they felt unwell due to the dust they inhaled for several days, but they complained to the relevant departments of the city government many times to no avail. The day before the man posted a video on Facebook of himself calling the city government to appeal again. In the video, he angrily said to the person on the other end of the phone, "I only ask you to do one thing now. Please notify Mayor Hou Youyi, the Director of Environmental Protection, and the Director of Public Works immediately. If my appeal through normal channels is not taken seriously, does that mean that citizens must sacrifice their lives before you awaken your conscience and responsibility? Only then will you care about the citizens' helpless cries for help?" Unexpectedly, the tragedy happened that afternoon. The man introduced himself on Facebook as a retired soldier who had served in the Republic of China Air Force. He was brought to the Hospital but died. |
