Im one of those who hate the american gun culture and obsession of guns, but in this case, the defender did the right thing. Its one of those few cases where having a gun is necessary and justified. As far as im concerned, a defender must always be allowed to use whatever they happen to have to defend themselves. If he had just returned from a lumber yard and happened to have a chainsaw in his hand, then in my opinion it would absolutely be justified to use it to slice and dice the attacker until they stop attacking.
There is no scenario where a defender must gamble their life so that another cunt could attack them. There is also no such thing as simply "getting beat up". A defender never knows before hand, if the attacker is gonna hit them once, if that one hit is gonna land them head first on the pavement, leaving them dead, or if the attacker would continue to kick a guy once they are down and beat them to death. When i was a kid, i actually lost my uncle in such an incident. He was attacked by a drunk guy, who hit him once in the head. That was it. Brain hemorrhage followed by death an hour later. Personally, i treat every attack against myself as "an attack with intent to kill" and i behave accordingly.

Most places in the United States, if you are threatened with deadly force, and somebody threatening to beat you up is just that, you have the right to do exactly that this guy did.
