Gotta agree with you a bit here. Any Navy Seal will tell you to run from a situation if able. Makes you wonder if, due to the reported history between the two, he was setting himself up for a self defense type situation in order to justify shooting the guy.

They knew each other well. At this point, the defender already had an active restraining order on the attacker. He randomly showed up to the defenders home to start a confrontation. I guess he was losing his marbles and got kicked out of mental facility for assault. Started randomly accusing the defender of theft, so he showed up at his house. Defender also stated that he knew the attacker owned/carried some type of Sig Sauer pistol, moments before firing, he felt like the attacker was reaching for something like that.

Prosecutors decided just to dismiss this, so they released him and gave him his weapons back.

"If able" are the key words here. The aggressive guy wasn't impressed by a gun being pointed at him. If the shooter had turned and tried to retreat what are the odds that the aggressor would have jumped him?

Always face the aggressor and back away slowly, that way you keep your eyes on them and they know it so they're less likely to sucker punch your ass. Or if they do you'll see it coming and can take action. Looked to me that this guy was going to keep coming no matter what.
