Actually, no. The plantations masters didn't hate their economic assets! The slaves were valuable property, property that needed to be maintained for the benefit of the owners. They went to war to prevent those damn Yankees from stealing away this means of support. Certainly as just a cause as many that are trotted out nowadays to justify war.
