I work on rail infrastructure and there's been a few times when I've been surprised by the sudden presence of a Pendolino thundering past. Usually you hear the track "singing" long before a train arrives; sometimes you just don't!

One time, I was remembering my Mum telling me that she and her childhood friends put pennies on the track to squash them. I'm pretty sure they would have done it in the vicinity of a station with a train slowly trundling past, anyway...

I placed a 2p on the track and stood about 3 metres back, a train came past at about 70mph and as soon as it hit the coin there was a loud bang. After the train passed, I found three copper "stains" on the track and half the coin buckled against a rock. Never again!

I'm fairly sure the driver would have felt the bump from it too!

Good to see another railwayman on here, them 390's are too quiet man. I suggest you watch some of the clips on OpsWeb, near misses etc. shocking stuff.

Yeah, it skips; check out the crossing lights as it happens, they go a bit funny for a while, strange.
