He did manage to have both feet beyond the second rail at the time of impact, so he wasn't run over by the train and mashed, "merely" hit and thrown off to the side. Hence the severe injuries which, not surprisingly, proved fatal. One step too slow.

The time he wasted saying good bye to the guy at the store was the same amount he needed to get out of the way of the train. |
