Gunmen have killed an Afghan citizen and three foreign tourists in central Afghanistan’s Bamyan province, the Ministry of Interior Affairs says.

Four foreign nationals and three Afghans were also injured in the attack on Friday when gunmen opened fire.

Four people have been arrested.

The Taliban government “strongly condemns this crime, expresses its deep feelings to the families of the victims and assures that all the criminals will be found and punished”, Qani said in a statement.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the late evening attack.

Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs later confirmed that the three individuals killed on Friday were Spanish citizens. At least one Spanish national was also among those injured.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a post on social media that he was “overwhelmed by the news of the murder of Spanish tourists in Afghanistan”, offering his condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

There has to be more to this than what the media is currently broadcasting. Random violence like this against innocent tourists is NOT in any way common in Afghanistan (outside of wartime, I suppose) . But even during the war, truly random tourists that had no affiliation with the fighting, but had legitimate business in-country were left alone for the most part.

I went to Afghanistan several times on vacation. I saw amazing things there. Walked through the ruins of an ancient “civilization”. Met people from an ancient culture, ate their food and drank their Chi. I traded many many gifts of copper and lead with them (they really like that). For a time I helped some other tourists wash their faces, teach them stretching exercises, introduced them to American dogs so they could learn how loving and gentle they are and in return some of those Afghans and their friends shared their deepest darkest secrets. It’s a loving gentle place where the people only embrace joy and happiness. I was amazed at how well educated their women and children are, they have such a deep deep passion for learning. Many many times I was surprised by how often they would celebrate their culture by throwing, what Americans would call 4th of July celebrations, right in the middle of the road. Seriously you’re driving down the road then out of no where an enormous firework would go off. What a beautiful and gentle people, I just can’t believe anything like this would ever happen there.
