Gunfight Near Israeli Consulate in Istanbul Leaves One Attacker Dead, 2 Injured
A major security incident unfolded today in Istanbul’s financial district when 3 armed assailants launched a brazen attack outside the building housing of the Israeli consulate. The 10-minute gun battle in the Levent neighborhood left one attacker dead and two others wounded. Two Turkish police officers also sustained minor injuries. The attack began around 12:15 PM local time near a permanent security checkpoint outside the Yapi Kredi Plaza on Buyukdere Street. Footage from the scene captured the attackers—wearing backpacks and dark clothing—firing automatic rifles and handguns at a police checkpoint while maneuvering behind parked vehicles. Turkish security forces stationed at the site immediately returned fire, neutralizing all three suspects within minutes. One assailant was killed on the spot, while his two accomplices were captured with non-life-threatening injuries. The assailants were armed with a combination of long-barreled weapons and handguns. Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi confirmed that the three suspects had traveled to Istanbul from the nearby city of Izmit in a rented vehicle. While full names have not been released yet, authorities provided the following identifying details: Yunus E.S. being the assailant killed at the scene and identified as having ties to an organization that "exploits religion". Onur Ç. and Enes Ç. being two brothers who were injured and taken into custody. One of the brothers reportedly has a prior criminal record for drug offenses. Investigators have detected intensive digital communication between the trio and are currently interrogating the surviving suspects. Two officers were wounded; one was shot in the leg and another in the ear. Both are in stable condition at a nearby hospital. No Israeli diplomatic staff were present at the time, as the consulate has not been operational for over two years due to heightened regional tensions. Istanbul Governor Davut Gül described the event as a "provocative act," while President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan labeled it a "treacherous attack" aimed at undermining Turkey’s security. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that a multi-faceted investigation has been launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. |
