Justified. I read the first page of comments so sorry if I re-post what someone else says, but in training for law enforcement or military you are trained to shoot to kill and continue firing until the subject is down and not moving or entirely incapacitated. Since the only reason you shoot is because someone is a deadly threat to others, any you keep slamming them down range until they stop moving to eliminate that threat. Police departments and other armed positions have gotten successfully sued in the past for trying that "shoot 'em in the knee" shit. When you're justified to shoot, you shoot to kill. All it takes is a single second and a missed shot or two for that police officer to be dead instead of the dickhead with the knife.

Clearly the cop was familiar with 'Ernie' and whether or not he had anything in his hands at the time is irrelevant. He made furtive movements as if he were reaching for something and the officer shot to protect himself. In the heat of the moment, he did exactly as he was trained which is multiple shots until the target stops moving. Maybe 'Ernie' didn't have anything in his hands, but that can only be told my Monday morning quarterbacking and the luxury of sitting in a nice, calm environment watching a video that doesn't show what he was doing or reaching for. The 'reasonable man' doctrine applies here- that given the same set of knowledge of the individual (he was a gang member with a violent past history including assault with a deadly weapon) and the actions taken by him made the cop make a decision in a split second under extreme stress.
