Because Canadians are of primarily Anglo-Saxon and French stock and both of those groups have basically an innate aversion to this sort of violence. They got that way as an adaptive strategy after ~10,000 years of long, cold northern european (and later north american) winters. That's not to say they are necessarily "peaceful" people, because they can have no problem with doing violence to foreigners if they feel justified. You just don't see it among people of the same ethnic group. There is a high economic cost associated with conflict and pretty much everyone who has survived down the millenia has inhereted traits associated with high-investment and mutual cooperation. They didn't get that way by being smug and morally superior or 'enlightened'. It wasn't government policy (sorry progressives) or religion (sorry conservatives) that caused it. It was necessity. In the tropics, you don't need any of that to survive, so "non-violence" traits aren't selected for. The closer you get to the equator, the more capriciously violent people get. It's the fuckin' heat and humidity, basically. Even whites in the U.S. south - mostly of English and Scots-Irish stock - are dumber and more violent then whites in their natural habitat and most of them have only been in the south a few hundred years. These men aren't insane and they may even be stone sober. They're doing pretty much the same thing their Aztec ancestors did... |
