I'm generally in sympathy with your comments, but have to make an exception here. In the interest of fairness, that Old Testament practice was never mentioned much less recommended in the New Testament. Furthermore, the general tenor of Christ's teachings is decidedly against such barbarity (e.g. the pardoning of the woman caught in adultery - a stoning offense in the Old Testament).
