Here's my two cents for what it's worth. If you take your trash out to the curb to be picked up you have voluntarily given up possession of it. Anyone can come and take it. Police do that all the time when searching for evidence. The tanker fuel spill was an accident and the fuel was not voluntarily given up. Technically, they still own it. It is stealing. The value only comes into play to decide the severity of the penalty for stealing the fuel.

I think your logic is strong. The trash is easy. That is called abandoned property. You, for sure, gave up any claim to it. The spilt fuel is more like my example of a dropped sandwich. If you drop your half eaten ham and cheese sandwich, and I pick it up, have I really stolen anything from you? Even if they were not technically thieves, they got a punishment from Jesus. |

I found this debate interesting. Your position is what is called a criminal mind. Criminals never see it. You fine them, you put them in prison, nothing helps. They continue to think they are right and are entitled to whatever isn't nailed down. Don't come around my house, please. I sometimes forget to lock the shed, and I leave my car unlocked in the driveway with coins in the holder.

My goodness, turn off the TV and read. "Criminal Minds" is that a real psychological term. "You put them in prison, nothing helps." Really? How do you know this? TV shows are not reality. Look up the term "straw man." It is what you are trying to do. You ignored my argument that picking up "abandoned property" that has absolutely no value if not picked up is not a crime. You equated what they were doing to grand theft. Again, turn off that idiot box and read. |

Ahem. You are the one who thinks a criminal mind is a TV show. I never watch "Criminal Minds". Too lurid and creepy. I prefer more substantial entertainment, like spanking trolls and playing mass incineration videos in slo-mo.
