Five Paramilitary Rangers Were Killed by Insurgents Shooting from Pick-up Truck
Thailand, Yesterday at around 6:45 PM to 7:00 PM local time a group of about 6 to 10 insurgents dressed entirely in black arrived at the Buketa Sami checkpoint in the Ra-ngae district using motorcycles and a four-door black Nissan pickup truck. The attackers rapidly besieged the post, which was operated by the 45th Ranger Task Force Regiment. They unleashed a barrage of automatic gunfire from assault rifles and hurled pipe bombs directly at the security personnel. Five paramilitary rangers died from wounds sustained during the heavy firefight. Master Sergeant First Class Teerayut Somaket Volunteer Ranger Wimon Dabthong Volunteer Ranger Nattasit Kaewsena Volunteer Ranger Salahuding Pi Volunteer Ranger Zakariya Che-na The crossfire also wounded six passing civilians, including three children aged three and ten. Before fleeing the scene, the attackers scavenged the checkpoint to strip equipment from the deceased rangers. According to Thailand’s Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), the insurgents looted three AK-47 assault rifles, three bulletproof vests, and three mobile phones. The attackers fled the scene along Highway 4055 toward the Dusongyo area. To eliminate forensic traces and delay pursuers, the suspects abandoned and torched their getaway pick-up truck in the neighboring Si Sakhon district, roughly 13 miles away from the ambush site. Thai security forces immediately cordoned off the area and deployed reinforcement units to launch a full-scale manhunt through the surrounding jungle terrain. |

They didn't stand a chance. I wonder if they even would have if they had maintained an acceptable level of situational awareness.

Always beware of your surroundings, especially at a checkpoint, but to be fair, they had to stand out in the open to do their job..

Re: Five Paramilitary Rangers Were Killed by Insurgents Shooting from Pick-up Truck
Five Thai soldiers were killed and six civilians were wounded Wednesday evening in an armed attack on a security checkpoint in Narathiwat province, marking one of the deadliest incidents in Thailand's restive south in recent years. According to the Thai army, gunmen opened fire and threw pipe bombs at the checkpoint while soldiers from the 45th Battalion of the Special Task Force were carrying out security duties to protect the local population. Six civilians were also injured in the assault. Local authorities said no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, and no suspects have been arrested as investigations continue. Southern Thailand — particularly the Muslim-majority provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala — has endured a low-intensity separatist insurgency since 2004. The conflict has claimed more than 7,000 lives, driven by rebel groups' demands for greater regional autonomy. |
