Nigeria, Five people have lost their lives in Ogun state after a high-speed car race between two students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Sapade, ended in a fatal crash.

Eyewitnesses said the students had reportedly staked N30,000 on the outcome of the contest, with the winner set to take the prize money.

The race turned deadly when both drivers lost control of their vehicles and slammed into a roadside shop near a garage where two people died.

One occupant from each car died instantly. Another was critically injured and taken to hospital for treatment. He died later on.

Two people who were inside the shop at the time were also killed on the spot. The crash destroyed parts of the building and damaged goods inside.

Bystanders attempted to overturn one of the wrecked cars to recover bodies trapped beneath.

The scene drew a large crowd as residents expressed shock over the scale of the destruction.

Some condemned the students’ decision to engage in a public speed contest, describing it as reckless and avoidable.
