Re: Five Killed After Mooring Rope Snaps

Loading management, is my only guess as there's no other way to have so much tension on that.
Plus, you have to remember that it's basically a 3rd world country with a 3rd world safety policy, along no money for new ropes ect ect ect.

Re: Five Killed After Mooring Rope Snaps

Maybe our resident expert who spent most his time in blue water taking dumps in the head. LOL.

Snap back zones can occur due various reasons. Vessels approximation was a possible factor. Having seen some Hindu operated vessels, old and unsafe/damage ropers can attribute to the failure.

Very sad tragedy. As usual, the wealthy corporation who owns those vessels will never take responsibility. The victims will most likely will not get any justice. I visited the are several times. Will never go back again. Some of the worst division of classes I have ever seen anywhere in the world.
Something tells me it’s not so much ‘wealthy corporations not taking responsibility’ situation, and more of a ‘South Asians taking shortcuts and disregarding all safety protocols as per usual’ situation.

I don’t speak their language, but by now I’m convinced they don’t have a direct translation for the word ‘negligence’.

Re: Five Killed After Mooring Rope Snaps

Why was that mooring cable / rope under such extreme tension when the ship was in port? I thought they just tied it off. Anyone have experience with those things? Curious...
Could be several reasons, if there is tide or current, if it was made off on a winch it could have been overtightened, or more simply, a rotted or damaged rope could part at anytime.
I've been at sea for fifty years and have seen ropes and wires part with frightening power, fortunately mariners are aware of the risks and on the ships I've sailed on have not been injured by such an event, plenty of dead and injured elsewhere though.

I think the captain might have tried to sail already or the rope was damaged, or possibly even both of these possibilities combined. Many tragic accidents involve more than one factor going wrong. The rope looked thick enough to hold a fucking oil tanker in place.
